It all started with an Airbnb advertisement I saw on Instagram. Yes, that was the Big Bang moment that eventually led to this epic journey we had to Udaipur. Believe me, if you are trigger-happy photography enthusiasts like me and Sarah sorting the best images is really tough. While Sarah is busy with the images, I decided to write on our first Airbnb homestay in Udaipur. We believe this would be the right start to take this blog forward and share our honest experiences.
Well, to be honest, Udaipur was not even on our list of destinations first. However, we wanted a place where we can get out of the fast-life cycle. We were desperate for a break.
We decided Hyderabad first, and then shifted our focus to Mysuru. Both these places are still on our list, but considering that it was raining hard down south, we changed plans.
So, what comes to your mind when you want to get away from heavy rainfall? A desert, right? We started focusing on the state of Rajasthan. The capital city of Jaipur was our first choice but I finally stuck to Udaipur as our destination. Sarah agreed happily.
One of the reasons we chose Udaipur is because it is one of the most romantic places in Rajasthan. It is the City of Lakes and hence perfect place for us love birds. Founded in 1559, by Maharana Udai Singh, Udaipur was the historic capital of the kingdom of Mewar. The beautiful waterscape of interconnected man-made lakes adds to the beauty of Udaipur.
Once we had locked in the destination we started looking for the best Airbnb homestay in Udaipur that can offer us great accommodation. After a lot of research and discussion we locked in on – David’s Bungalow.
While we intend to take the flight, both I and Sarah are passionate about trains and therefore we booked our seats way in advance. We were equally nervous and excited because it was the first time we had booked an Airbnb homestay in Udaipur.
Of course, we had read the reviews and seen the images on Airbnb, but what you see is not always what you get. We made the most of our train journey and were excited to be in Udaipur.
Our train experience was quite good as you can see in the pictures. The train took two long stops that offered us the time to eat and replenish our food stock. We took a night train from Mumbai and we arrived in Udaipur the next evening.
When we were done photo-shooting at the station we booked an Uber ride and we arrived at David’s Bungalow.
The moment we entered the compound there was a wild thought running at the back of my mind. It was the moment of truth. We were finally at the destination. However, my apprehensions were laid to rest the moment Samir greeted us.
Being the host, he showed us the room, which was EXACTLY the way it is in the pictures on Airbnb. While we were a bit tired from our 16-hour train journey, we were happy to be in the room. We took our time to freshen up and it was time to finally the meet the host family.
The art in the room caught my attention the moment we went in. We were in the company of an artist family. Along with Samir, Shruti and Shuri Aunty walked in to greet us and the conversations began. We were at complete ease now.
Samir is a professional content writer and portrait photographer, so we had plenty to talk about. Shruti, his elder sister, is an artist and her paintings and craft adds another dimension to the entire property. Shuri Aunty puts you at ease with her motherly care and attention.
To take the experience to the next level, Rover Almighty (Black Labrador) came to greet us. Rover and I had an instant connection and we fell madly in love with each other. By the way, Rover has his own Instagram profile. Dusky (the cat) introduced herself later and showcased her agile moves. Our first Airbnb homestay in Udaipur was surpassing all our expectations.
Let’s take a photographic tour of the room, shall we?
The next morning, in fact every morning, it was overwhelming to see Shuri Aunty and Shruti bring us breakfast. Honestly, I and Sarah were touched by their affection, love and kindness. It seems like we were now in the company of people from small town with a big heart.
While we were mostly out of the home for our daily activities we had lot of conversations with Samir, Shruti and Shuri Aunty. We will cover more about them again in the future post which will be our tribute to the lovely people of Udaipur.
Considering that we prefer quiet places, David’s Bungalow was the perfect Airbnb homestay in Udaipur for us. Although, it was a bit far from some of the main attractions near the Lake Pichola, but it was exactly what we wanted. Udaipur is a small town. As a result most attractions are not very far. A ten-minute Uber ride can take you from one place to another.
Samir and his family helped us a lot with their feedback and suggestions and it added to our research. Often we would return home in the evenings and share what we covered. At times, we would share our life experiences and moments that are so personal to us. Furthermore, we also touched upon many other topics that went on for hours.
Our week-long experience with Samir, Shruti and Shuri Aunty passed by in a blink of an eye. However, we will always cherish the memories and sweet moments we spent together. They touched our soul with their kindness and generosity and made our first Airbnb homestay in Udaipur the most memorable ever.
Have you ever tried Airbnb? Share your experiences, if you have.
