Pune, the twin city of Mumbai might not be as popular as Mumbai that gets the national coverage and international recognition, but this city has grown tremendously in the last few years to offer the best urban lifestyle that one can think of. Of course, there are some places that are common for many travelers in Mumbai and Pune, but here I have tried to explore some new monsoon destinations that I have not mentioned in my earlier articles, so hopefully my readers will not get bored. Here we take a quick look at the top 5 must visit monsoon destinations near Pune.
Lonavala-Khandala
Nestled in the Western Ghats around 70 kilometers from Pune you will find Lonavala and Khandala which are hill stations that one can visit during monsoons. Both the hill stations are highly popular with people from Mumbai and Pune as they come down here to enjoy the rain and the pleasant climate that Lonavala and Khandala has to offer. One can find many top holiday spots here that can offer so much to the travelers.
Enjoy the Rajmachi Point, Tiger’s Leap, Duke’s Nose and Karla Caves when you are here. Many come down to Lonavala to enjoy some great time at Bushi Dam especially during the rainy season. The Mumbai Pune Expressway has made it easier for many people in Mumbai and Pune to reach Lonavala and Khandala in short time. You can even pick many inter-city trains that run frequently to reach Lonavala and Khandala every day.
Mulshi
Not too far away from Pune you will find Mulshi that offers the perfect weekend getaway from Pune. If you don’t want to travel too far from the city you will find Mulshi a perfect place around Pune that offers so much more for so little. With so much greenery, rivulets and waterfalls you will find this place perfect for spending some great time with friends and family members. This place is towards the west of Pune and also not too far from Lonavala.
You can enjoy Mulshi Dam that offers a great view especially during the rainy season. You can enjoy some forts here like Dhangadh and Koraigadh if you like to visit historic locations. This place is also great for bird watchers and nature lovers to explore the flora and fauna and for those who want to relax and unwind on weekends.
Kaas Lake
Satara is not too far from Pune and if you have a vehicle you can head off to Satara. This beautiful and scenic place offers a better way for many Pune residents to just take their time off from their work and head into places that offer complete peace of mind. During the monsoon time, Kaas Lake is one of the top places around Pune that you can visit and enjoy mountains, lakes, rivers, waterfalls and lots of flowers.
This also attracts many photographers locally that come here to click some great pictures of the flowers and Kaas Lake is often term as the Valley of Flowers in Maharashtra. This lake is 23 kilometers from the Satara city and 133 kilometers from Pune.
Karnala
Monsoon season is the best time for many bird watchers and 120 kilometers from Pune, Karnala offers the best place around Pune that let bird watchers to enjoy the nature in its fully glory. There is so much that Karnala can offer to all travelers that want to enjoy the nature wild and wet.
Travelers can also explore the Karnala Fort and down the fort you will find bird sanctuary which is temporary home to many bird species like Red Vented Bulbul, Myna, Owl, Horn Bills, Paradise Fly Catcher and Robin Magpie. During the monsoon the entire area is covered in green lush blanket offering great landscape view to photographers. There are regular buses from Pune to Panvel and Pen that travelers can take to reach Karnala.
Malshej Ghat
While some travelers prefer the same old Lonavala, Khandala and Mahabaleshwar as their monsoon holiday destination there are many others that look out for some new destinations. Malshej Ghat is quickly turning into the new holiday destination for many Mumbaikars and for people of Pune to spend their weekends amidst dark rain clouds and dense fog that offers them something new.
With lots of waterfalls and flowers and animals around Malshej Ghat has managed to attract many locals especially towards the weekend. You can reach this destination in the Sahyadri Hills from Mumbai as well as from Pune. From Pune you can find many state transport buses from Shivajinagar ST stand.
